Charitable Contributions

In 2022, charitable donations totaled $499 billion, down 3.5% from the 2021 record level of $517 billion. 2022 was only the fourth time since the early 1980s that total donations declined without accounting for inflation. After inflation, charitable giving fell 10.5%, the steepest decline since the Great Recession of 2008/09. $319 billion came from individual donors, which equals $1,200/American adult or 2% of personal disposable income, or income after taxes.
