Where’s Daddy?

In 2011, 4.1 million women gave birth, 36% of which were unmarried, up from 31% in 2005. 57% of women without a high-school degree, 49% of women with a high-school diploma, 40% of women with some college and 8.8% of women with a bachelor’s who gave birth were unmarried. States with the highest percentages of births to unwed women include DC at 51%, LA at 49% and MS/NM at 48%.

Where’s baby?

Teen births fell another 9% to just 34 births per 1,000 girls in ’10, and are now at the lowest rate since data collection began in ’40. Since ’91 teen births have fallen by 44%. Absent that fall, there would now be 3.4 million more babies. MS leads with 55 births per 1,000 teen girls, followed closely by NM at 53, AR at 52.5, TX at 52.2 and OK at 50.4. At the other end, the six New England states and NJ are the seven states with the lowest rates.

Bad Economy, Fewer Babies

US birth rates fell for the 3rd straight year in ‘10 according to the CDC. Teen births saw the biggest decline, 9%, to 43.3 births/1,000 females, the lowest rate ever. And, for the 1st time in a decade cesarean section rates declined from 32.9% in “09 to 32.8% in ’10. More than 33% of births are to unwed women.
