Olympic Outcome

With the Olympics almost over, among winter powerhouse countries the one that most positively surprised was Netherlands with 22 medals, double what was expected. Conversely, Austria, Germany, Norway and South Korea all won about 40% fewer medals than expected. Most amazing, Netherlands brought just 41 athletes and won 22 medals, a ridiculous half a medal/participant! 21 medals were in speed skating and one in short-track speed skating. Talk about specialization!

Caribbean Champs

The US (population 300 million) won 104 Olympic medals besting China (population 1.3 billion) with 88 medals, but which country was #1 after adjusting for population? On a per capita basis, Grenada was first, winning a medal for every 111,000 people, with Jamaica next, winning a medal/225,000 people. The US ranked 49th winning one medal/3,000,000 persons, China was 88th with a medal/15,000,000 people and India was last with a medal/207,000,000.
