Downtown Domicile

Between ‘00 and ‘10, Chicago had the largest numerical increase in its downtown population (defined as areas within two miles of City Hall) at 48,288, NYC was next at 37,422, Philadelphia at 20,769, Salt Lake at 19,712, and DC with 19,502. New Orleans lost the most, 35,000 (Katrina) followed by Baltimore at 10,000. Downtown populations grew 13.3% in the largest metros, but remain a small percentage of the overall population.

  1. Great stat. Good to see Chicago on top. I think another interesting angle here is that according to census data Chicago overall dropped population between 2000 and 2010. The stats above for the smaller “downtown” region show a migration from outlying neighborhoods to city center.
